The Spot
Hugo's sits in Houston's Hyde Park, a proper sit-down room built around regional Mexican cooking rather than the taqueria model most diners expect. It has spent over a decade as one of the city's most decorated kitchens, with the James Beard Foundation naming it a Best Chef winner in 2017 and returning again and again with nominations across categories — Best Chef finalist in 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015, Outstanding Wine Program in 2015, Outstanding Service in 2018 and 2019, Outstanding Hospitality in 2020 and 2022, and Outstanding Restaurateur as both semifinalist and finalist for 2026.

The kitchen leans on homemade fundamentals — fresh, house-made ingredients that show up across the menu — and has built a following around its plantain empanadas and seafood dishes in particular. Ceviche, pollo al, lamb, taquitos, and tortillas made in-house all come up regularly in what regulars order, alongside tres leches and churros for dessert. Brunch has developed its own following separate from dinner service.

The overall pitch is authentic Mexican cooking served with the polish of an upscale dining room, backed by service diners describe as memorable.
