Our Take

Candente cooks Tex-Mex over live fire, and that single choice shapes everything on the table. Smoked brisket nachos, seafood enchiladas, wood-grilled fajitas, rib racks, chile rellenos — the smoke isn't a garnish here, it's structural. The family-style feasts make the case best: a spread built for a table that wants to share, with the char doing the work that usually gets faked with a griddle.

The Montrose original earned enough of a following that the format traveled, and the Bellaire location running the same menu is a vote of confidence, not a dilution. Nothing on the plate is trying to reinvent Tex-Mex. It's trying to cook the standards better than the places coasting on nostalgia, and it does.

Two straight years of Michelin selection back up what the food already argues, and a pair of national recognition-list nods confirm this isn't a local secret anymore. The trophies are just paperwork on a kitchen that was already delivering. Go for the fajitas. Bring people to split the feast.

The Spot
Candente sits on Yoakum Boulevard in Montrose, serving Tex-Mex built around dishes like queso topped with chopped brisket and brisket enchiladas. The name itself resists a single translation — depending on who you ask, it means "burning," "a hot topic," or "incandescent" — and the restaurant leans into that ambiguity rather than settling on one.

The drink list runs deep on tequila and mezcal: sea salt-rimmed margaritas, mezcal margaritas, tequila flights split into highland and lowland pours, ranch waters, and sangria round out a bar program built for lingering.

Regulars point to the guacamole, salsas, and generous portions, and the Montrose original has developed a reputation as a neighborhood gem that gets crowded on weekends. Candente has since opened a second location in Bellaire, appeared on the Eater 38 list for Houston, been reviewed by both Eater and The Infatuation, and was named to Michelin's Selected roster in both 2024 and 2025.
