Our Take

Bar Buena is a mezcal lounge first, a kitchen second, and it earns the right to lead with the bar. The shelves are stacked deep with Mexican spirits, the agave list runs long, and the cocktails do real work — a milk punch number clarified and spiked, a bitter amaro-leaning drink built around banana. The room stays dim and close, built for sitting with a glass rather than rushing through a meal.

The food menu is small and doesn't try to be more than it is: coastal central Mexican plates done with precision. Gulf crab tostadas, ribeye tacos, masa cakes under braised duck leg — nothing filler, everything pulling its weight on a tight list. This is the team behind Goode Co. Kitchen & Cantina in River Oaks working a completely different register, and it shows discipline rather than a side project.

Service and atmosphere match the drinks and food, which is the rarer trick — plenty of mezcal bars coast on the shelf alone. Bar Buena backs it up plate for plate, pour for pour. A Michelin Bib Gourmand confirms what the room already proves: this is a bar that happens to cook very well, not the other way around.

The Spot
Bar Buena is a mezcal lounge in River Oaks, from the team behind Goode Co. Kitchen & Cantina, specializing in agave spirits — tequila and mezcal — with low lighting and shelves stacked with Mexican spirits. The bar carries an extensive agave list and focuses on regional mezcal-making traditions and barrel selection for aged tequilas.

Cocktails include the Ardilla, made with Mexican corn whiskey, cocoa nibs, oloroso sherry, ancho reyes, and a clarified milk punch, and the Uno Amargo, a bitter, banana-laced drink. The food menu is small, built on coastal central Mexican plates: Gulf crab tostadas, ribeye tacos, and masa cakes topped with braised duck leg.

Michelin awarded Bar Buena a Bib Gourmand in the 2026 guide.
