The Spot
Umai sits on Clark Street in the Loop, working from a menu that blends classic Japanese technique with international flavors rather than sticking to a strictly traditional format. At the sushi bar, chefs work in view of guests, turning out sushi alongside the rest of the menu in a dynamic, interactive setup.

The room leans modern-lofty: dark, high ceilings, hanging lights, and a Japanese mural set against warm, earthy tones, built for both a quiet meal and a livelier night out. Portions run generous, and the drink program — built around sake and wine — has developed its own following alongside the food.

Regulars have kept coming back over the years, even as service quality draws mixed reactions, a known inconsistency alongside otherwise strong marks for food and atmosphere.
