Our Take

Mi Tocaya works because it refuses to sit still. The room is loud in the right way, walls thick with bright artwork, tables packed close enough that the energy off one becomes energy for the next. Creative Mexican food gets built on the antojería idea — the small, craveable plate — and the kitchen leans into that instead of apologizing for it. The chef works the floor between tickets, checking on tables, explaining a dish, then disappearing back to the line. That's not showmanship. It reads as someone still personally invested in what leaves the kitchen, plate after plate, night after night.

The recognition has been consistent rather than one lucky year: James Beard semifinalist and finalist nods stacking up since 2019, a Michelin Bib Gourmand more recently, plus spots on national best-of lists. That's a decade-long case, not a hot streak.

What sells it, though, is simpler than any trophy. You leave fed, a little louder than when you walked in, having eaten something that tasted like somebody's specific idea of a good time. Logan Square has plenty of options. This is the one that actually delivers on the mood it promises.

The Spot
Mi Tocaya Antojería is chef Diana Davila's neighborhood Mexican restaurant on Logan Boulevard. The name — "my namesake" in Spanish — is a term of endearment for sharing someone else's name, and it frames a menu drawn from Davila's own memories of summers and family travels through Mexico.

The menu runs in a progression of small, medium, and large plates, blending Davila's versions of familiar Mexican dishes with lesser-known regional specialties and original creations tied to her heritage. Tuesdays bring a wine night built around small-production, biodynamic, minimal-intervention bottles, and Wednesdays bring a burrito suizo — a steak burrito under salsa ranchera and melted cave-aged Alpenhorn Swiss cheese.

Davila has been a repeat James Beard Award finalist and semifinalist for Best Chef, including consecutive Great Lakes nods through 2026, and the restaurant holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand awarded in 2025.
