avec opened on Randolph Street as a wine bar and has held its spot in the West Loop for 20 years, the second concept from One Off Hospitality. The kitchen turns out Midwestern interpretations of Mediterranean classics, drawing on the wine regions of southern Europe, served as small and large plates meant for sharing at communal tables.
Regulars order the chorizo-stuffed dates, focaccia, and bacon-wrapped dishes, alongside rotating salads, white fish, and a chicken dish that keeps coming up in recommendations. Brunch service and gelato round out a menu that reviewers describe as inventive. The restaurant has since expanded into avec river north and bar avec, an Iberian coastal-inspired rooftop spot on the 8th floor of 640 N LaSalle.
avec earned Michelin's Bib Gourmand in 2019 and 2021, and has been Selected in the guide's 2024 and 2025 editions. Its chef won the James Beard Foundation's Best Chef award in 2010, after being named a finalist the year before.
