Our Take

EL Ideas seats you inside the kitchen — not at a counter facing it, in it — and the chefs bring you each course themselves, because there is no one else. Phillip Foss built fine dining with the fourth wall torn out: a starred tasting menu that plays like a dinner party where the hosts happen to be professionals at the top of their craft.

The intimacy isn't a gimmick; it's quality control. When the person who plated the dish hands it to you, nothing arrives less than finished. More than a decade in, the formula still hasn't been duplicated.

The Spot
EL Ideas sits on West 14th Street in North Lawndale, an elevated dining format built around an open kitchen where the cooking and the dining room share the same space. The result is an interactive experience — guests watch the food come together a few feet away — inside a room regulars describe as warm and intimate.

Desserts have built a reputation of their own here, coming up often enough in conversation to function as a highlight of the meal rather than an afterthought. French Fries & Ice Cream has become enough of a fixture that the restaurant gives it its own mention on the website.

Michelin has awarded EL Ideas one star in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2021, 2024, and 2025. The James Beard Foundation named it a semifinalist for Outstanding Restaurant in 2026, following earlier Best Chef semifinalist recognition in 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017.
