Our Take

Virtue serves the Southern canon in Hyde Park without irony or elevation-speak: catfish, gizzards, greens, mac and cheese, cooked by Erick Williams with the exactness that won him a James Beard award and the steadiness that keeps the room full of neighbors instead of pilgrims.

The Bib Gourmand is the right badge for what this is — serious cooking that stays a neighborhood restaurant on purpose. Plenty of chefs celebrate Southern food. Virtue trusts it, which is rarer and better.

The Spot
Virtue serves Southern American cooking in Hyde Park, working through a menu of catfish, fried gizzards, collard greens, cornbread, short ribs, and a T-bone, with banana pudding and cake for dessert — dishes that turn up again and again in what diners order.

The restaurant's chef was a James Beard Best Chef finalist in 2020, a StarChefs Rising Star in 2021, won the James Beard Award for Best Chef in 2022, and took the James Beard Foundation's Emerging Chef award in 2023. Michelin has awarded Virtue a Bib Gourmand across multiple guides, including 2019, 2021, 2024, and 2025.

Eater has named Virtue to its Chicago best-of list, and Time Out Chicago included it on its 2025 city best-of list. Robb Report named it among its Best New Restaurants for 2026.
