Sandy's opened in May 1946, built by Andy Harris and his business partner Glen Teter after Harris moved to Austin from Akron, Ohio with his wife Goldie and daughter Sandy, for whom the place is named. Goldie ran the business until 1964, when she and Andy sold to Teter, who ran it until shortly before his death in 1969. The current owner, Jearl Ledbetter, has held it since November 1979.
The menu centers on old-fashioned hamburgers, backed by a full lineup of soft-serve treats — cones, shakes, malts, sundaes, and floats, including a chocolate-rimmed waffle cone filled with chocolate soft serve.
Sandy's has held its spot on Barton Springs Road for nearly eight decades, with regulars citing quick, friendly service and a menu that hasn't strayed from its roots.
