Our Take

Hayakawa is a chef's counter in the oldest sense: Atsushi Hayakawa behind it most nights, cutting fish for people he recognizes, running the sushi with a consistency that regulars describe like a standing appointment.

Michelin has starred it since Atlanta's first guide, and the Beard Foundation has circled the chef. But the certification that matters is simpler — in a city suddenly full of omakase, this is the counter where the chef's own hands are still the product.

The Spot
Hayakawa is a sushi restaurant in West Midtown run by owner and chef Atsushi Hayakawa. Michelin has awarded it one star in each of its first three guides — 2023, 2024, and 2025 — and Hayakawa has credited guests, team, and the guide for the streak. In 2024, he was named a James Beard Foundation semifinalist for Outstanding Chef.

Regulars point to the freshness of the ingredients, the attentiveness of the service, and the chef's presence at the counter as reasons they keep returning. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution named Hayakawa among the city's best restaurants of 2025.
