Our Take

The Admiral works from a cinderblock box in West Asheville and turns it into something genuinely strange and good: antique tin ceilings and polished mahogany sitting inside a room that still reads like a dive bar. That tension is the whole point. The kitchen runs a menu that splits the difference between steakhouse and New American, and it earns the split. Beef tartare and duck cavatelli are the kind of classics that could coast, but they're cooked with real precision. The anchovy tartine and the sweet potatoes with 'nduja and whipped feta are where the place shows its personality — dishes built to surprise, not just to satisfy.

The room backs up the food. Service reads as confident and attentive, the kind that matches a menu willing to take chances. A few recent nights have wobbled on consistency, but the baseline here is high enough that the wobble doesn't define the place.

The recognition tracks with the eating: a Michelin Guide selection, a James Beard Best Chef semifinalist nod, and a spot on a national year-end list. None of that is why the food works. It's confirmation of a kitchen that already knew what it was doing.

The Spot
The Admiral runs an American menu out of West Asheville, built around entrees like a pork chop and gnocchi, with salad, bread, potatoes, and fries rounding out the table.

The restaurant carries a Michelin Guide Selected listing for 2025 and a James Beard Foundation Best Chef semifinalist nod from 2013. It's also been named to Time Out Asheville's 2025 best-of list and featured in The Infatuation's coverage of the city's dining scene.

Service is frequently singled out as one of the restaurant's steadiest strengths, with staff noted for guiding tables through the menu.
