Abuelita's Kitchen is run by Guadalupe and her brother, uncle Ignacio, who cooks the vegan side of the menu. Their food traces back to meals Guadalupe grew up eating in Apipilulco, reworked here into a menu with both traditional and vegan/vegetarian options. Before opening under their own name, the pair worked behind the scenes cooking for other restaurants, work that got them featured on the Food Network.
The kitchen makes its own tortillas by hand, the base for the quesa birria tacos — tortillas dipped in guajillo chile, filled with mozzarella and birria, cilantro, and onion, then grilled crisp — served with a completely vegan rice and beans. Enchiladas, quesadillas, street taco plates, and rice-beans-and-cheese burritos fill out the rest of the menu, with smaller kids' portions available. A walk-up window in back serves street tacos late into the night.
Regulars point to the handmade tortillas, a salsa bar with real range, and portions that don't hold back.
