Our Take

The Happy Crane arrived already knowing what it wanted to be. It stepped out of pop-up status into Hayes Valley with a one-page menu that doesn't waste a line — traditional Cantonese cooking pushed through small, exacting twists rather than reinvented wholesale. The dim sum-inspired plates carry the kitchen. The Golden Coin, a butter-grilled bao topped with rosé chicken liver mousse and shaved coppa, lands early and vanishes fast, and it's the kind of bite that explains the whole approach: dense, layered, over before you've finished thinking about it.

San Francisco already has a crowded shelf of upscale Chinese kitchens competing for attention. The Happy Crane doesn't win that fight by being louder — it wins by having dishes nobody else on that shelf is making. Service keeps pace with the food, the room holds its own, and nothing on the menu feels like filler between the hits.

A James Beard Best New Restaurant semifinalist nod in 2026 confirms what the plates already argue. This is a kitchen with a clear point of view, executing it with real precision. Go for the small plates. Don't skip the Golden Coin.

The Spot
The Happy Crane serves modern Chinese cuisine à la carte in Hayes Valley. Chef James built the menu on experience cooking across Hong Kong and Beijing, blending traditional technique with contemporary touches rather than following a set tasting format.

The menu leans into small, dim sum-inspired plates designed for sharing — among them the Golden Coin, a butter-grilled bao topped with rosé chicken liver mousse and coppa. Peking duck has become a particular draw, alongside a cocktail and dessert program that regulars single out alongside consistently well-executed dishes and attentive, personalized service.

The Happy Crane was named a James Beard Foundation Best New Restaurant semifinalist in 2026.
