Our Take

Mensho Tokyo built its reputation on one broth, and the reputation holds up. The chicken-based soup is the point: thick enough to coat a spoon, closer to gravy than stock, built with a richness that doesn't quit by the last noodle. The noodles themselves are house-made and springy, cooked to a chew that holds its structure against all that cling. With roughly a dozen bowls on the menu, there's room to explore, but the fundamentals — broth, noodle, technique — are consistent across all of them.

People wait for this, and the wait gets justified at the table. This isn't novelty ramen chasing a trend; it's a kitchen executing one format with real discipline, bowl after bowl, with nothing feeling phoned in.

The Michelin Guide has taken notice, naming it among its selections. That's confirmation, not the reason to go. The reason is simpler: this is some of the most honest, best-executed ramen in the city, and it tastes like it every time.

The Spot
Mensho Tokyo SF is the San Francisco outpost of a ramen shop with roots tracing back to founder Tomoharu Shono, who established Menya Shono in 2005. The space runs counter-style and casual, built for working through bowls rather than lingering.

The signature Toripaitan Ramen is the anchor: a chicken-based soup built on shio koji and dashi, finished with pork and duck chashu, and served in two variations over house-made noodles. The wheat for those noodles is bought directly from farms and stone-milled in-house. Beyond the toripaitan, the menu runs through A5 Wagyu Tantanmen, Chashu Mazemen served without broth, a matcha-spiked Duck Matcha ramen, and a Vegan Tantanmen, with ingredients sourced from Japan's seas and fields.

Mensho Tokyo SF was selected for the Michelin Guide in 2026.
