Our Take

Ju-Ni is twelve seats and one argument: let the fish do the talking. No gold leaf, no ceramic props, no uni piled on for show — just a fourteen-course omakase built around twelve pieces of nigiri and rice that's been seasoned with real precision, each grain carrying vinegar instead of drowning in it. The fish, much of it flown in from Japan, rotates with the season, but the kitchen always finds a moment to surprise: a shaved, frozen monkfish liver pâté that reads like funky, umami Dippin' Dots is the kind of detail that separates a chef with a point of view from one just plating protein.

The ratio helps. One chef working for roughly every four guests means the counter stays personal, the pacing stays tight, and nothing feels rushed or recited. That intimacy is the restaurant's real selling point as much as the fish itself.

It isn't flawless — portions run small for what you're paying, and consistency can wobble meal to meal depending on the night. But the highs are real and frequent enough to matter, and Michelin's selection of the restaurant for 2026 confirms what the counter already shows: a kitchen that trusts restraint over spectacle, and mostly earns that trust.

The Spot
Ju-Ni takes its name from the Japanese word for "twelve" — the seat count at its single sushi counter in NoPa, where one chef works for every four guests through a nightly omakase.

The omakase runs 14 courses, twelve of them nigiri, with rice seasoned in vinegar and fish drawn mostly from Tokyo's Toyosu Market, filled out by specialty purveyors. The menu changes with the seasons. A shaved, frozen monkfish liver pâté is a recurring course.

Michelin selected Ju-Ni for its 2026 guide.
