Our Take

Yuji hides above a karaoke bar in Japantown, which makes the reveal land harder: push through the noren and the room drops into something monastic, nine seats wrapped around a counter where the kitchen works in full view. The format is kappo, a seasonal procession of courses rather than a menu you pick from, and the range inside that structure is the point — sliced duck and marinated shrimp and octopus giving way to wagyu with melted edges and nigiri finished with a torch. Fourteen courses in one sitting is a lot to ask of consistency, and most nights it holds.

Most nights. The counter seats are intimate enough that a slow stretch or an off plate registers immediately, and there's enough variance in the service and pacing reports to know this isn't a machine running on rails. What it is, when it's working, is a genuine special-occasion room doing specific, disciplined cooking in a city with no shortage of competition for that slot.

Michelin selected it for 2026, which tracks with what the counter already delivers on a good night. The inconsistency keeps this from the top tier. The craft on display keeps it well clear of a pass.

The Spot
Yuji is a kappo restaurant hidden above a karaoke bar in San Francisco's Japantown — walk past the noren and the room opens into a quiet nine-seat counter built for close, deliberate cooking. The menu shifts with the seasons but runs a steady 14 courses a night, moving through dishes like sliced duck, marinated shrimp, octopus, melty-edged wagyu, and blowtorched nigiri.

The counter format puts the chef directly in front of diners, and regulars describe real engagement and storytelling through the meal rather than a silent procession of plates. It's developed a reputation as something of a hidden gem in the neighborhood, with particular praise for its cooked courses.

Yuji was selected for the Michelin Guide in 2026.
