Our Take

3rd Cousin takes the tasting menu format and strips out the ceremony that usually comes with it. No dress code, no two-and-a-half-hour slog, no stiff service — just a tightly packed room where staff in button-ups and jeans move fast between two-tops, courses land in quick succession, and you can show up in a baseball cap or your nicest date outfit without either reading wrong.

That ease would be a gimmick if the food didn't hold up, and it does. The cooking is confident and seasonal, American in the way that lets a plate make its own case instead of leaning on a server's pitch. The tradeoff is real: tables run tight, portions skew small for a multi-course format, and the noise climbs once the room fills.

None of that undercuts what's working. A tasting menu this casual, moving this briskly, with service this attentive without hovering, is rare — most restaurants chasing that format treat comfort and ambition as opposites. Michelin selected it in 2026. The crowd's noise complaints are the cost of a kitchen that earned its hype rather than coasting on it.

The Spot
3rd Cousin is an American restaurant in Bernal Heights from chef and owner Greg Lutes, offering both a la carte fine dining and tasting menu formats — a 5-course vegetarian menu, a Chef's 8-course menu, and a Chef Counter Tasting Menu.

Pasta is made fresh daily, including hand-rolled pici, campanelle, and agnolotti, alongside dishes like grilled Spanish octopus, halibut crudo, king salmon, and an uni crème brûlée. The kitchen sources from named farms, including K&J peaches and Devoto Orchards apples, and makes its focaccia from scratch.

The dining room is intimate, with tightly packed two-tops, and the service style leans casual and attentive rather than formal, with courses moving along at a steady pace.

Michelin selected 3rd Cousin for its 2026 guide.
