Our Take

Azalina's is the only restaurant in the city doing a Malaysian tasting menu, and it does it communally — strangers sharing a table over four courses in a Tenderloin room painted floor to ceiling with murals, thick with plants, lit by windows. That setup could feel gimmicky. Instead it reads as the point: a format built for conversation, not isolation.

The menu rotates with the seasons, and that rotation comes with real variance. A sweet barley and corn soup can sit beside a dish like idiyappam with pumpkin curry where the beans don't quite land. But the kitchen's range is wide enough to absorb a miss, and dessert never wavers — a steamed sweet potato cake balanced against pomegranate molasses, edible violets, and macadamia is the kind of course that justifies the whole sitting on its own.

What holds the place together is consistency where it counts: the hospitality, the specificity of flavor, the sense that nothing here is generic Southeast Asian comfort food dressed up. Regulars keep coming back for exactly that.

A Michelin Guide selection for 2026 confirms what the room already argues. This is a place built on a genuinely singular idea, executed well enough, often enough, to matter.

The Spot
Azalina's is a tasting-menu restaurant in San Francisco's Tenderloin neighborhood, run by chef and owner Azalina Eusope. Born and raised in Penang, Malaysia, she comes from five generations of street food vendors, and her cooking draws on family tradition, memory, and hospitality built around bold flavor and storytelling.

The menu rotates seasonally and is served at communal tables, putting diners at the same table as strangers for the evening. Dishes have included a sweet barley and corn soup and idiyappam with pumpkin curry, with dessert — a steamed sweet potato cake balanced with pomegranate molasses, edible violets, and macadamia nuts — standing out as a consistent highlight. The dining room is covered in murals, plants, and windows, giving the space a bright, lived-in feel.

Michelin selected Azalina's for its guide in 2026, and the restaurant's chef was a James Beard Best Chef: California semifinalist in 2024.
