Our Take

La Petite Grocery sits on the Magazine Street stretch that makes Uptown worth walking, and it's built for exactly that kind of evening: a bistro that takes Creole fine dining and works it into something modern without losing what makes it Creole. The blue crab beignets are the dish people plan around, and they earn it. The pasta with turtle ragu is the rarer thing — an old New Orleans ingredient handled with enough control that it reads as current rather than nostalgic.

That's the trick of the place. Nothing on the menu feels like a museum piece, and nothing feels like a stunt either. The kitchen has kept a chef in the city's Best Chef conversation for five straight years running, with a win in the middle of that stretch, which tracks with what lands on the table: technique that serves the ingredient instead of showing off around it.

Local coverage keeps circling back to it for a reason, and Michelin's selection this year confirms what regulars already knew. This is a restaurant that does the classic New Orleans bistro correctly, then adds just enough to make it its own.

The Spot
La Petite Grocery occupies a Creole-style cottage built in the late 1800s on Magazine Street, a building that spent over a century as a coffee and tea depot, grocery store, butcher shop, and florist's studio before it became a restaurant in 2004. Chef Justin Devillier and his wife Mia rebuilt the space after Hurricane Katrina and took over ownership of the Uptown restaurant in 2010.

Devillier, who moved to New Orleans from Dana Point, California in 2003, cooks a French-inflected take on New Orleans cuisine. Turtle Bolognese and Blue Crab Beignets are the dishes most tied to the kitchen, and reviewers also point to the rabbit, shellfish stew, butterscotch pudding, and a Sunday brunch built around a pickle bar.

Devillier won the James Beard Award for Best Chef: South in 2016, following four consecutive years as a finalist from 2012 through 2015. StarChefs named the restaurant to its Rising Stars class in 2022, Michelin selected it in the 2025 guide, and it landed on both NOLA.com's and Where NOLA Eats' 2025 best-of lists.
