Our Take

Mister Mao runs on collision — dim sum next to pani puri next to fried chicken, a menu that shouldn't hang together and does. Red coconut curry shrimp dumplings share space with garlic noodles and fried chicken finished with pickled pineapple, and none of it reads as gimmick because the kitchen commits fully to each reference instead of blending them into something safer.

Sit at the bar if you can. The kitchen is open, the line moves with real rhythm, and watching it work is half the meal. Brunch here isn't a quieter version of dinner — it's the same conviction, same range, in daylight.

The plates are small and built for sharing, which suits a menu this restless. Nothing on it plays it straight, and the kitchen has the technique to back up the ambition instead of just gesturing at it.

The city and the country both caught on. A James Beard semifinalist nod for Best Chef in the South, a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and multiple national recognition lists all point at the same kitchen doing the same thing well. The noise didn't create this. The food did.

The Spot
Mister Mao calls itself a tropical roadhouse, and it wears that description on its sleeve: quirky, eclectic, and "unapologetically inauthentic," built on refined small plates that draw from global flavors while sourcing locally. It's an Uptown spot on Tchoupitoulas Street, with dinner service through most of the week and a dedicated weekend brunch on Saturdays and Sundays alongside its own cocktail program.

The kitchen has picked up real recognition. Mister Mao holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand as of 2025 and was named a James Beard Foundation Best Chef South semifinalist in 2024. Eater has also included it among its essential New Orleans restaurants.

The room runs lively — the restaurant's own instruction is to "come as you are and with an open mind," and diners describe the atmosphere as loud and energetic, for better or worse.
