Our Take

The Charter Oak has been in St. Helena long enough to be judged on more than a debut splash, and it holds up. A restaurant doesn't get named a James Beard finalist for Best New Restaurant in 2018 and still turn up in Michelin's Napa Valley selection in 2026 by coasting. That's eight years of a kitchen staying sharp while trends in the valley came and went around it.

The cooking here reads as American in the plainest, best sense: unfussy, ingredient-forward, built for a Wine Country crowd that wants a serious meal without theater. St. Helena keeps it on its short list of places locals actually return to, not just visitors passing through on a tasting-room circuit.

That kind of durability is the real case for The Charter Oak. It's not chasing a moment. It found a register early and has simply kept playing it well, long after the initial buzz should have faded. Worth the drive up-valley on its own terms.

The Spot
The Charter Oak sits in the heart of St. Helena, run by Chef Christopher Kostow, who also cooks at The Restaurant at Meadowood. The approach here is different: simple, approachable, seasonal food served family-style, with grilled meats, vegetables grown on the restaurant's own 3.5-acre farm, local wines, and cocktails anchoring the menu.

The restaurant is co-owned by Kostow alongside Martina Kostow and Eli Snowdon, with a team that includes a dedicated farm director overseeing the produce that shapes the seasonal offerings.

The Charter Oak was a James Beard Foundation Best New Restaurant finalist in 2018, was selected for the Michelin Guide's 2026 edition, and was named among Napa Valley Life magazine's best restaurants of 2025.

It has built a steady local following, drawing regular praise for its atmosphere, food, and service, and functions as something of a neighborhood fixture even as it pulls in visitors passing through wine country.
