Our Take

Smoke & Dough's whole argument is that barbecue doesn't have to pretend Miami is somewhere else. The brisket gets a cafecito rub and a guava barbecue sauce, and it still reads as proper Southern smokehouse cooking underneath — the bark is there, the texture is there. This isn't novelty seasoning on a tourist menu. It's a kitchen that understands the rules of the form well enough to bend them without breaking them.

The menu backs that up with real swings: brisket mole, burnt end empanadas, croquetas and tequeños sitting next to a tray of ribs. Few barbecue joints anywhere would risk that combination. Fewer still would make it taste inevitable instead of gimmicky.

It also solves the genre's biggest annoyance. No standing in line for hours only to be told the brisket ran out — you can reserve a table and actually plan a meal around eating well, not around enduring a ritual. That alone separates it from most serious barbecue rooms in the country, and the food holds up its end once you're seated. This is a kitchen that took two cuisines seriously and let them argue with each other instead of compromising. The result earns its plate.

The Spot
Smoke & Dough is a West Kendall smokehouse built around Southern barbecue technique filtered through Miami ingredients. Brisket gets a cafecito rub and smokes for 15 hours; pulled pork goes 12 hours; baby back ribs, pork belly, and house-brined pastrami round out the smoker lineup. Ribs come glazed in guava-ancho sauce, and the kitchen runs dishes like brisket mole and burnt end empanadas alongside croquetas and tequeños — tapas sitting next to smokehouse plates on the same menu. Even dessert gets smoked, including a smoked flan.

The restaurant grew out of the team's earlier Empanada Harry's, carrying that Latin-American throughline into a full barbecue operation where everything is smoked and made in house.
