Our Take

Hop Alley takes its name from Denver's old Chinatown, and it wears that history with a wink rather than reverence — this is Sichuan cooking turned loose in a room that runs on hip-hop and boozy drinks poured into boba cups. Nine years in, it's still the restaurant other Five Points openings get measured against.

The kitchen's trick is running classics through a curveball without losing the dish underneath. Chinese broccoli gets dusted with duck salt and stays recognizably itself. Pork and pickled cabbage dumplings carry real heat, the numbing Sichuan chili kind, not a gesture at it. Nothing here reads like fusion for its own sake — it reads like cooks who know the tradition well enough to bend it.

The wine program is doing more than most Chinese restaurants attempt, and it's been recognized as such nationally. Three straight years of Bib Gourmand recognition and a Beard semifinalist nod for the kitchen confirm what the room already tells you: this isn't a novelty act that got lucky once. It's a restaurant that figured out its identity early and has kept sharpening it since.

The Spot
Hop Alley serves family-style Chinese food out of Five Points, with fried rice and gai lan among the dishes regulars keep coming back for.

Tucked inside the same building, The Chef's Counter operates as its own thing — six seats, a menu built separately from the main dining room. It currently hosts "Petit Chelou," a residency from chef Doug Rankin, formerly of Bar Chelou in Pasadena, serving neo-bistro cooking shaped by his time working under José Andrés and Ludo Lefebvre.

Hop Alley has picked up Michelin Bib Gourmand recognition in 2023, 2024, and 2025, and was named a James Beard Foundation semifinalist for Outstanding Wine Program in 2025 and for Best Chef in 2020. It's also landed on Eater's Essential 38 and Westword's best-of list for 2025.
