Our Take

Select Oyster Bar skips the obvious move. A New England raw bar with no clam chowder on the menu sounds like a dare, but chef-partner Michael Serpa backs it up — the mixed ceviche opens a meal with real precision, and the cauliflower with hazelnut aioli gives non-seafood eaters something worth ordering on purpose rather than settling for. That's the house's argument in miniature: nothing here is on the menu by default.

The room works the same way. Tucked into a Back Bay townhouse, it's small, a little odd, hung with art that doesn't match any mood board, built around a solid bar and a back patio that make it as much a drink destination as a dinner one. Service holds up under that informality instead of getting lazy with it, and regulars keep coming back for the same reason: it's consistent in a category where consistency is rare.

Michelin has it on the current Boston guide, and it landed on a notable list again this year. Neither trophy is why it works. The food and the room are why. Go for oysters and a drink, stay for the ceviche, skip the chowder without regret.

The Spot
Select Oyster Bar is a neighborhood seafood spot in Boston's Back Bay from Chef Michael Serpa, formerly executive chef at Neptune Oyster. The room keeps a casual bistro feel, with a good-sized bar, a back patio, and walls hung with a loose, funky mix of art.

The raw bar runs on local oysters, and the kitchen builds out from there with crudo, ceviche, sautéed petit clams, Spanish octopus, and whole roasted sea bream, with local fish worked into the specials. There's no clam chowder on the menu, and non-seafood eaters get an out in the cauliflower with hazelnut aioli. For bigger appetites, seafood towers stack the raw bar's offerings into a single order, ranging from $100 to $325.

The wine list leans into seafood-friendly bottles with a particular focus on Chablis, and the bar pours cocktails built on small-batch spirits.

The restaurant has built a loyal regular following around its oysters and attentive service. Michelin selected Select Oyster Bar for its 2025 Boston guide, and the restaurant's chef was a James Beard Best Chef: Northeast semifinalist in 2025.
