Automatic Seafood and Oysters gave Birmingham the seafood restaurant it had no business expecting: Adam Evans, back in Alabama after big-city kitchens, cooking Gulf fish with the exactness that won him the Beard Foundation's Best Chef in the South — for this room, not a résumé entry.

The Lakeview spot runs polished but unfussy, oysters at one end and precise fish cookery at the other, and the guide's recognition followed the Beard win. Inland seafood is usually an apology. Automatic is a destination, and Birmingham knows exactly what it has.

The Spot
Automatic Seafood and Oysters sits in Birmingham's Lakeview District, working a menu centered on seafood and oysters that shifts with the seasons.

The restaurant's kitchen earned the James Beard Foundation's Best Chef award in 2022 and was a finalist for Best New Restaurant in 2020. Michelin selected it for its 2025 guide, and Bham Now named it among the city's best restaurants for 2026. The Infatuation has also covered it.

Regulars return repeatedly, and the oyster program in particular has built a reputation among locals, alongside praise for the service and atmosphere that keep the room full.
