The Mustard Club sits in Pepper Place, in the heart of Birmingham's Lakeview District, near where the Pepper Place Farmers Market sets up. Its name borrows from a piece of advertising history: in 1926, before she became a celebrated crime novelist, Dorothy L. Sayers wrote a campaign for Colman's Mustard built around a fictional members' club with characters like Baron de Beef and Lady Hearty, official rules, a secret password, and a run of mania that saw hundreds of thousands of badges mailed out before it closed in 1933. The restaurant carries that name forward.
