Our Take

Bayonet operates as a bar and grill in downtown Birmingham, a format that rarely asks for much and rarely gets much attention when it delivers more than expected. This one has. The gap between what the label promises and what the kitchen actually produces is the case for going.

The recognition backs that up rather than manufacturing it. A James Beard Foundation semifinalist nod for the chef and a Michelin Guide Bib Gourmand are not honors that fall on a place coasting on a downtown address or a familiar menu. They go to kitchens doing more with an ordinary assignment than the assignment requires, and national lists have taken notice on top of it.

A bar and grill built this seriously, and rewarded this consistently, earns the trip.

The Spot
Bayonet occupies the Berry Building in Birmingham's Central City, a raw bar and seafood-forward restaurant from Chef Rob and Emily McDaniel. The name comes from the Spanish Bayonet plant, meant to reflect strength and endurance.

The kitchen works around whole-fish butchery, building a seasonal menu on raw bar classics alongside dishes like tuna chop, swordfish reuben, and a signature tuna burger. Seafood and produce come through Gulf fishermen, regional farmers, and oyster partners along the Gulf, East, and West Coasts, with oysters rotating seasonally by farm. The cocktail program includes tableside martinis and a drip coffee service.

Chef Rob McDaniel was named a James Beard Foundation Outstanding Chef semifinalist for 2026, and Bayonet was awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2025.
