Hot and Hot Fish Club has been doing this long enough to have earned the right to stop trying so hard, and it hasn't stopped trying. The Lakeview room still runs on the same instincts that built its reputation: a kitchen that treats seasonal ingredients as the actual plan rather than a marketing line, and a dining room that backs it up with service that doesn't waver.

The recognition here isn't a fluke or a legacy trophy gathering dust. The kitchen's chef collected Beard finalist and semifinalist nods across six straight years and won Best Chef outright in 2012, a run that only happens with real consistency behind it. Local coverage keeps circling back to the place for the same reason diners do.

What's remarkable is how little of that has calcified into complacency. A 2025 Michelin selection means the current kitchen is still cooking at a level worth checking on, not coasting on what it did a decade ago. Recent visits back that up: strong food, attentive service, an atmosphere that still feels specific to Birmingham rather than generic fine dining. This is a restaurant that has stayed good instead of just staying open.

The Spot
Hot and Hot Fish Club has operated in Birmingham's Lakeview District since 1994, run by Chris and Idie Hastings and a team that has spent decades building relationships with local purveyors, foragers, and artisans. The cooking takes a modern approach that blends Southern, French, and California influences.

The dining room centers on a chef's counter and open kitchen, with large windows, exposed brick, a 17-foot upholstered banquette, Greystone Italian marble tabletops, and locally sourced hackberry wood.

Chris Hastings won the James Beard Foundation's Best Chef award in 2012, following finalist recognition in 2011, 2010, 2008, and 2007, and a semifinalist nod in 2009. The restaurant carries a Michelin Selected designation from 2025 and was named to Bham Now's list of the city's best for 2026.
