The Spot
Stack City BBQ sits on Research Boulevard in North Austin's Wooten neighborhood, where pitmaster Mark Avalos learned the craft in East Austin before opening his own smokehouse. The build here layers central Texas post-oak barbecue technique with a 90s hip-hop sensibility — murals cover the smokehouse walls, and the menu names follow suit.

Smoked meats can be ordered straight or built into sandwiches. The Notorious P.I.G. combines smoked pork with mustard slaw and a backyard red sauce. The McDowell uses deboned pork ribs with pickles, onions, and a house Soul Glo sauce. Nachos come loaded with a choice of brisket, ribs, smoked chicken, pulled pork, or hot link sausage, topped with queso, the same red sauce, pickles, onions, and jalapeños.

Regulars point to the ribs and the banana pudding as standouts, alongside a staff that keeps the room feeling welcoming rather than showy. The kitchen also handles catering for groups of 25 or more, from buffet spreads to boxed lunches.
