Our Take

El Naranjo cooks Oaxaca specifically, not Mexico generally, and that specificity shows in the details that don't cut corners: nixtamalized corn tortillas made in house, moles built the slow traditional way. The mole negro is the clearest argument on the menu, deep and nutty, ladled over a duck breast seared with real precision and left alone on the plate with nothing but rice to distract from it. That restraint is confidence, not laziness.

The rest of the menu backs it up. The tlayuda Oaxaqueña arrives oversized and blistered, cut with a red salsa that actually has heat behind it. The queso fundido and the rotating ceviche de la semana keep the format honest — a kitchen that changes its specials but never wavers on its fundamentals. The room, bright and modern at the base of a South Lamar apartment building, gets loud, and Sunday brunch at the wraparound bar turns that energy into a draw rather than a flaw.

The city's cooking establishment noticed years before anyone needed a headline to tell them: a James Beard Best Chef win, with semifinalist nods in the years before it. The tortillas alone would have gotten El Naranjo there.

The Spot
El Naranjo was a Mexican restaurant on South Lamar in Austin, led by chef Iliana de la Vega alongside Ernesto. After 16 years in the city — starting as a food truck before moving into a brick-and-mortar space and finally its South Lamar location — the restaurant has closed.

The menu drew on regional Mexican cooking, with moles, ceviche, and queso fundido among the dishes diners frequently mentioned, alongside duck breast and flan. A weekend brunch service ran alongside the regular dinner menu.

De la Vega's work at El Naranjo earned national recognition from the James Beard Foundation, including the Best Chef: Texas award in 2022, following semifinalist nods for Best Chef Southwest in 2019 and Best Chef Texas in 2020.
