Bread & Butterfly

Bread & Butterfly runs two menus that shouldn't work together, and does. Mornings and lunch stay French bistro through and through — blue and white cafe tables, a plant-lined patio, a ceiling gilded like it wants you to notice. Dinner turns Haitian, since the chef from the Heritage Supper Club pop-up took over the kitchen in 2023, and the two identities trade shifts instead of fighting each other.

The food backs up the concept. Ravioli joumou takes a French form and fills it with Haitian soul, landing as more than a novelty pairing. Djon Djon, rice and mushroom cooked black and fragrant, justifies building a whole service around a different country's pantry. Neither menu reads like a gimmick grafted onto the other.

The room does its job, close tables and warm light and a patio worth lingering on, but what's landing on the plate is the reason to return. A spot on the New York Times' national restaurant list this year confirms it, rather than explains it. The explanation is a kitchen that found a second identity and made it the better one.
