Our Take

Ivy City Smokehouse runs on the kind of unpretentious confidence that's hard to fake. This is a neighborhood smokehouse built around cured and smoked seafood, and the room leans into its own history rather than chasing trends — regulars at the bar, easy banter, drinks poured strong and without ceremony. Nobody here is dressing up the experience, and that's the point.

The kitchen doesn't need theater because the smoking does the work. Seafood built around smoke and cure is a specific discipline, and the fact that it keeps landing well enough to matter, year after year, says the fundamentals are sound even when the room gets the attention. This isn't a place chasing a reservation line — it's a place people keep walking into.

Michelin has backed that up five separate years running with a Bib Gourmand, the kind of recognition that rewards consistency and value over spectacle. That's the right lens for Ivy City: a place that delivers real satisfaction without asking you to be precious about it. Go for the smoked fish, stay for the bar. Both hold up.

The Spot
Ivy City Smokehouse sits in the Ivy City corridor of Northeast DC, built around an in-house smoking program. The kitchen turns out cold-smoked salmon, peppercorn hot-smoked salmon, honey "candy" salmon, smoked trout, and smoked whitefish salad, served as shareable platters alongside fresh seafood.

The menu extends past the smoker with ribs, a burger, mac and cheese, and fries. Dishes come out of an open kitchen that puts the cooking on display, and the space includes a roof-top patio along with the Great Room for larger gatherings.

Michelin has awarded Ivy City Smokehouse a Bib Gourmand in the Washington DC guide across multiple years, including 2025, 2024, 2022, 2021, and 2019.
