Our Take

Dōgon is Kwame Onwuachi cooking at the height of his powers with a thesis: Afro-Caribbean flavor — Nigerian, Jamaican, Trinidadian, Creole — as a through-line of American cooking, plated at the Southwest waterfront with unapologetic spice and shine. The name reaches back to the West African Dogon people, and the menu carries the history lightly.

The lists arrived immediately — the Times, 50 Best, Bon Appétit — but the room explains it better: this is the most electric dining room in the city, and the food out-talks the crowd.

The Spot
Dōgon by Kwame Onwuachi sits in Southwest Washington, an African restaurant carrying the chef's name.

The recognition has piled up quickly. Michelin selected Dōgon for its 2025 Washington DC guide, Bon Appétit named it among its Best New Restaurants of 2025, and The New York Times put it on its 2025 Restaurant List. It has landed on North America's 50 Best Restaurants list in both 2025 and 2026, and Eater included it in its Essential 38. Washingtonian also named it among the city's best in 2025.
