Our Take

Spruce has been a Presidio Heights fixture long enough to feel like furniture — leather chairs, a regular crowd that's been coming for over a decade, the kind of room where a dressed-up night still feels normal. The three-course prix fixe does what it's supposed to do: crudo, duck breast, a chocolate tartelette to close. It's handled well. It won't surprise you.

The real case for Spruce is at the bar. Order the burger there and skip the formal menu's price entirely — it holds its own against anything in the city doing the same job, and a Boulevardier next to it is the right call. A la carte entrees at the bar get you a full dinner without the tasting-menu markup, and the lighter lunch and brunch prix fixe versions make the same room accessible at lower stakes.

Service and atmosphere back all of it up, night after night, not just on a good visit. Michelin selected it for its 2026 guide, and it was a James Beard Best New Restaurant semifinalist in 2008. The formal menu is fine. The bar is why you come back.

The Spot
Spruce is an upscale American restaurant in Presidio Heights, serving dinner, lunch, brunch, and cafe service to a crowd that includes plenty of longtime neighborhood regulars. Nearly all of its produce comes through a proprietary partnership with SMIP Ranch, a five-acre organic farm in Woodside, and the wine program runs to more than 3,500 selections alongside handcrafted cocktails.

Dinner is served as a prix fixe moving through three courses — crudo, duck breast, and chocolate tartelette among them — in a dining room furnished with heavy leather chairs. At the bar, the format opens up: a la carte entrées are available, including a burger that's developed a following, alongside cocktails like the Boulevardier. Lighter prix fixe menus run at lunch and brunch.

Spruce was selected for the Michelin Guide in 2026 and was a James Beard Best New Restaurant semifinalist in 2008.
