Outerlands

Outerlands sits a few blocks from Ocean Beach, and the room sells that proximity hard — weathered wood planks, curved walls, the feel of standing inside a boat hull while the fog rolls past outside. That atmosphere alone gets people in the door. The food is why they come back.

Brunch is the real argument, served Friday through Sunday, and it's built around a Dutch pancake that earns the hype: puffed, crisp at the edges, dusted with powdered sugar, served with a scoop of housemade ricotta mild enough to eat by itself with a spoon. Around it sits a sticky bun worth turning heads for, good toast with house butter and jam, and a breakfast sandwich that holds its own without trying to be the star. Nothing here is reinventing American comfort food. It's just executing it with unusual care, dish after dish.

The complaints are real but minor — parking is a pain, portions run small, service can lag when the room fills. None of it undercuts the cooking.
