Chapeau has operated on Clement Street in the Inner Richmond since 1996, run by chef-owner Philippe Gardelle alongside his wife Ellen and their son, sous chef Andrew Gardelle. It's a traditional French bistro built on scratch cooking, with dishes made to order from the freshest ingredients the kitchen can source.
The menu leans on the bistro standards: escargots, coq au vin, and crème brûlée are signature dishes, alongside cassoulet, filet mignon, tarte grand-mère, ratatouille with fried polenta, branzino, and a cheese-crusted French onion soup.
The space is snug and warmly lit, the kind of room that works equally well for a first date, a family dinner, or a regular night out with friends.
