Our Take

Routier wears a disguise well. It reads as a relaxed neighborhood French spot in Lower Pacific Heights, the kind of place you'd wander into without expectations. The chicken liver mousse gives away the game: shaped like two eggs, finished with a red currant compote, served on a vintage floral plate, it's the kind of luxurious, ultra-smooth preparation that turns a starter into the reason you came. Spread it on multigrain toast with a little preserve and the rest of the meal has something to live up to.

It does. The dinner that follows reads as a sequence of dishes built to be remembered individually, not just as courses to clear. That's the trick here — comfort-food instincts executed with real technique, in a room that never signals how seriously it's cooking.

Service and atmosphere back up the kitchen rather than coasting on charm, which is why the complaints that surface are almost entirely about cost rather than quality. That's a fair trade for food this precise. A Michelin selection for 2026 confirms what the mousse already told you: this is a destination that chose to dress down.

The Spot
Routier takes its name from the French roadside restaurants known for simple, delicious food and prompt, informal service — the spirit co-owners Chef John Paul Carmona and Pastry Chef Belinda Leong brought to this corner of Lower Pacific Heights. Leong and co-owner Michel Suas also run B Patisserie.

The kitchen leans into French comfort cooking: a chicken liver mousse shaped like two eggs, topped with red currant compote and served on a vintage floral plate, has become a dish regulars point to, and the duck confit has built its own following. Plates favor quality over quantity, and the service has a reputation for being both attentive and well-suited to group dining.

Michelin selected Routier for its 2026 guide.
