Our Take

A restaurant on a retired ferry is a genuine novelty, and DiMillo's harbor view delivers exactly what the postcard promises.

The novelty is the whole business. The seafood is banquet-grade New England standard — cooking that would close on land within a year, kept afloat by the fact that it floats — and no critic, guide, or award has ever said otherwise. Portland is one of the best seafood towns in America. All of it is ashore.

The Spot
DiMillo's occupies a converted ferry moored at Long Wharf, putting diners on the water itself rather than just looking at it, with tables set against panoramic views of Portland Harbor. The building's past life as a boat gives the space its defining quirk — a working waterfront restaurant that still floats.

The kitchen serves New England seafood, and the connection to Portland's harbor is part of the draw as much as any single dish. Regulars and first-time visitors alike come for the combination of fresh catch and a setting unlike anywhere else in the Old Port.

Service gets consistent praise from diners, and the ferry-turned-restaurant format has made DiMillo's a stop for people exploring Portland's waterfront district, not just a meal but part of the experience of seeing the harbor.
