Hai Hai takes its name from the building it occupies — a nod to the space's earlier life as 22nd Avenue Station, a dive bar and strip club known locally as Deuce Deuce. "Hai hai" means "two two" in Vietnamese. Chef Christina Nguyen runs the kitchen, drawing on dishes she grew up eating at home, at family celebrations, and on trips through Southeast Asia, pushing past standards like pho toward regional dishes and her own creations.
The menu leans bright and herb-forward, with sticky rice, spring rolls, shrimp toast, laab, and crepes among the dishes that come up most with regulars, alongside beef and rib preparations and a large outdoor patio for warmer months. The bar pours tropical cocktails built on the same Southeast Asian flavor palette as the food.
Nguyen has been a fixture at the James Beard Awards, named a semifinalist for Best Chef in 2018, a finalist in 2020, a semifinalist for Best Chef Midwest in 2023, and finally winning Best Chef Midwest in 2024.
