Our Take

Diane's Place cooks Hmong American food in Northeast Minneapolis with a pastry chef's hands — Diane Moua built the menu from her heritage's comfort recipes and her own celebrated pastry career, and the two halves braid the menu, pastry-case mornings on one end, composed dinners on the other.

The recognition is national: Beard Best Chef finalist attention, the Times, North America's 50 Best. Hmong cooking has fed the Twin Cities for two generations with almost no institutional notice. Moua's room ended that, plate by plate.

The Spot
Diane's Place is a Hmong American restaurant in Northeast Minneapolis serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Chef and owner Diane Moua, Le Cordon Bleu-trained, spent years as executive pastry chef at La Belle Vie before working with Soigné Hospitality Group; here she brings that pastry background together with the comfort recipes of her Hmong heritage, cooking with locally grown and raised produce. The restaurant sits inside the Food Building, a former horse veterinary clinic turned local food hub, alongside a private event space for larger gatherings.

Recognition has piled up quickly. Moua was a James Beard Foundation Best Chef Midwest finalist in 2025 and a semifinalist in both 2025 and 2026, and the restaurant landed on North America's 50 Best Restaurants list for 2026. It's also been named to The New York Times' Restaurant List for 2025, Mpls St Paul Magazine's Best 2026 list, and Eater's Essential 38.
