Chug's isn't fusion cooking — it's autobiography. The menu reads like a specific childhood: Cuban grandparents cooking lechon with rice and black beans next to the American diner stuff that showed up on special occasions, McDonald's pancakes and Burger King pie translated into a kitchen that takes both halves seriously. Abuela's plate shows up whole, banana balanced on the rim exactly the way it would have been served at the source.

That specificity is what makes it work. A restaurant chasing a vague "Cuban-American" concept would hedge toward safe versions of both cuisines. Chug's doesn't hedge — it commits to one family's actual memory of growing up in Miami, down to the batidos and the diner staples that only mean something if you know why they're there. The result tastes personal in a way that's rare for a menu this playful.

The Bib Gourmand recognition from Michelin's guide confirms what the food already argues: this is a kitchen operating with real discipline underneath the nostalgia. Chug's isn't coasting on a theme. It's cooking a specific life, course by course, and getting it right.

The Spot
Chug's Diner sits in Coconut Grove as part of Ariete Hospitality Group, led by Michael Beltran. The space leans into retro diner charm while the kitchen works from scratch, turning out Cuban-American comfort food built on the rhythms of a Miami Cuban upbringing — dishes like Abuela's plate, served with a banana perched on the rim, channel that lineage directly.

The menu runs from the Cast Iron Pancake, a shareable skillet pancake, to the Cuban-American Sandwich, a twist on the classic Cubano. Homemade croquetas and fresh pastelitos filled with guava, cheese, or picadillo round things out, alongside cafecitos on the express side of the menu.

Chug's Diner holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand for 2026.
