Our Take

Mister Charles occupies the old Highland Park Soda Fountain building, dating to 1912, and it wears that pedigree with polish rather than nostalgia. Venetian plaster walls, soaring ceilings, a room built for celebrations — this is a restaurant that knows how to make an entrance feel like an event. The kitchen backs up the spectacle. The menu reads Italian at its base but wanders through French technique and touches of India and North Africa, and it works because nothing feels like a stunt.

Start with the caviar egg salad, a single confident bite built for a glass of Champagne or the house martini, garnished with its own tray of pickles on the side. The caesar holds its own against the bigger plates. Spicy pastas and whole roasted snappers carry real weight, and the steaks are good enough to make you forget you didn't come for a steakhouse.

Dallas noticed. Mister Charles has held a place in the Michelin Guide's selection two years running, and local press has kept it on its short list of restaurants worth naming. The glitz could easily be the whole story here. It isn't — the kitchen backs it up plate for plate.

The Spot
Mister Charles occupies the landmarked former Highland Park Soda Fountain Building on Knox Street, a space with 38-foot ceilings and an opulent, over-the-top design that Duro Hospitality has called its most ambitious restaurant and bar. The kitchen takes irreverent, globally-inspired approaches to French and Italian dishes, backed by a drinks program built on elevated cocktails and rare wines.

The room reads as polished and elegant, drawing diners marking anniversaries and other occasions worth dressing up for, with service that consistently earns praise for its attentiveness. Reviewers note the execution can be inconsistent dish to dish, and prices run high enough that value perceptions are mixed.

Michelin has selected Mister Charles in both its 2024 and 2025 guides.
