Our Take

Gemma has been running the same play for twelve years, and it still works: oysters, steak frites, a wine list built for lingering, a room built for both a Tuesday and an anniversary without either feeling wrong. The menu drifts between French and Italian without landing hard on either, which sounds like a hedge but reads as confidence. Nobody's chasing a concept here.

The room does real work. Mustard-yellow banquettes, low light, tables close enough that dates lean in over shared pasta and groups of friends work through chilled seafood platters like they've got something to prove. That's the trick — cozy enough for a random weeknight, composed enough to hold an occasion, and it hasn't needed a redesign to keep pulling both crowds back.

Henderson Avenue has turned over around it for a decade, restaurant after restaurant chasing whatever's next. Gemma didn't chase anything. It kept making oysters and steak frites taste like the reason people come back, and the recognition followed rather than led: back-to-back Bib Gourmands, a James Beard hospitality finalist nod. The kitchen didn't need the trophies to know what it was doing. Go for the oysters, stay for how unbothered the whole place is by trends around it.

The Spot
Gemma sits on N Henderson Ave, describing itself as Dallas' neighborhood bistro even as it draws crowds looking for a proper night out. The room reads romantic and upscale, and diners consistently point to the appetizers and signature dishes as reasons to return, alongside a wine list that gets singled out on its own.

Service is a defining part of the experience — Gemma was a 2024 James Beard Award finalist for Outstanding Hospitality, and the staff shows up again and again in what regulars talk about. Michelin has awarded the restaurant a Bib Gourmand in both 2024 and 2025, and Eater has named it to its Essential 38 list of Dallas restaurants.

Gemma operates alongside its sister restaurant, Sachet.
