Our Take

Alla Vita works from clear advantages: a West Loop address, a big room, and a kitchen that had every reason to coast on those alone. It doesn't. The space itself argues for the place before a plate arrives — hanging plants, string lights, an overhead installation that ripples like gills, room enough that the crowd never feels stacked on itself. That kind of design usually signals a restaurant built for photos over food. Here the food actually holds up its end.

What makes it work is that the buzz isn't hollow. The room stays busy, the staff moves with real energy, and none of it reads as spectacle covering for a thin kitchen. The cooking is the reason people keep coming back, not the incidental thing happening under the string lights.

Four consecutive years on the Michelin Guide's Chicago selection back up what the room already tells you: this isn't a restaurant riding on real estate and design. Getting a table takes patience, but the bar and patio open the same kitchen to anyone willing to show up early. Do that.

The Spot
Alla Vita sits on West Randolph Street in the West Loop, part of Boka Restaurant Group under chef/partner Lee Wolen. The name translates to "to life" in Italian, and the restaurant is set up as a neighborhood spot for casual, family-style Italian cuisine, from lively lunches to dinner celebrations.

Fresh pasta and pizza anchor the menu. Dishes that come up often among diners include roasted octopus, fritto misto, and lasagna, alongside its bread program.

Alla Vita has appeared on Michelin's Chicago Selected list every year from 2022 through 2025, and The Infatuation scored it 8/10.
