The Spot
Since 2018, The Essential has run as an all-day bistro on a sunny corner of downtown Birmingham's Central City neighborhood, moving from weekend brunch through lunch, dinner, and dessert. The kitchen works from scratch, including house-made pasta, alongside a list of natural wines and cocktails suited to lingering over a long lunch or late dinner.

Tucked inside the restaurant is Paul & Tina's, a bar with its own personality — a more hideaway, conversation-driven space for seasonal cocktails within the larger room.

Regulars point to the coffee and drinks program and the consistency of the kitchen's execution, alongside service that's been called attentive and friendly. Bham Now named The Essential one of the city's best restaurants for 2026.
