Our Take

Johnny's has spent five years proving its first James Beard nod wasn't a fluke. The Best Chef recognition runs from 2019 through 2020, then again in 2022 and 2023 — that kind of stretch means a kitchen that keeps finding new reasons to be taken seriously, not one that peaked early and coasted on the first mention.

The hospitality nomination in between matters just as much as the chef nods. Restaurants tend to get noticed for the plate or the room, rarely both. Johnny's pulled a nomination for outstanding hospitality the same era it was racking up Best Chef finalist slots, which says the floor is held to the same standard as the stove. In Homewood, a neighborhood that doesn't need a destination restaurant to survive, that combination is the whole argument.

Local coverage keeps circling back to it, the kind of standing mention a restaurant earns by staying good long enough that nobody has to re-litigate the case each time it comes up.

Five years of national attention, spanning both the kitchen and the room, is not the record of a place trading on an early reputation. It's the record of one still doing the work.

The Spot
Johnny's Restaurant carries a family name with deep roots: chef Timothy Hontzas's grandfather, Johnny Hontzopolous, opened his first restaurant in Mississippi in the 1950s, and a cousin later opened a second Johnny's in Birmingham before Tim opened his own version in Homewood in 2012. The menu blends classic Southern meat-and-three plates with Greek specialties tied to that heritage — spanakopita, souvlaki, rolo kima (a Greek-style meatloaf made with lamb), and a house-made yiaourti cheesecake.

Before opening his own place, Hontzas worked under chefs including John Currence, Erling Jensen, Chris Nasons, and Rick Kangas. Regulars describe the food as generous and consistently well executed, with a depth that stands out for a counter-service meat-and-three.

Johnny's has drawn repeated national attention from the James Beard Foundation, including a Best Chef (South) finalist nod in 2023, a Best Chef finalist nod and Outstanding Hospitality semifinalist nod in 2022, and Best Chef semifinalist recognition in both 2020 and 2019. Bham Now also named Johnny's among Birmingham's best restaurants for 2026.
