Our Take

Comedor announces itself before you sit down. The building reads like an industrial hangar wrapped in glass, and the room inside keeps that ambition going: concrete floors, long communal tables, booths that manage to feel intimate anyway, and light fixtures overhead that look sculptural rather than functional. Garage doors open the whole space to the street. It's a serious design statement for a modern Mexican restaurant, and it earns the attention it demands.

That kind of room could easily be all surface, a place selling atmosphere over substance. Comedor doesn't play that way. The confidence in the space matches a kitchen working a modern Mexican register with real intent, and the combination is rare enough in Downtown Austin to stand out immediately — walking in has the effect of making you feel like you've leveled up before the first course arrives.

Back-to-back Michelin selections confirm what the room and the food already argue on their own: this is a restaurant operating at a level most of its neighbors aren't reaching for. Comedor built something distinct and is being recognized for it, not coasting on the recognition.

The Spot
Comedor serves modern Mexican food in downtown Austin, from chef Philip Speer, in a space designed by architect Tom Kundig. The menu runs a la carte, with a separate group dining program for larger parties.

Reviewers regularly point to dishes like bone marrow, tuna, and aguachile, alongside a mezcal-driven bar program.

Comedor has been Michelin Selected in the Texas guide in both 2024 and 2025, and was named to A Taste of Koko's list of Austin's best restaurants for 2025.
