Our Take

Heirloom Market BBQ runs the fusion trick that usually fails and makes it work: Texas smoke technique paired with Korean flavor logic, run by a former K-pop performer and her Texas-raised husband since 2010. The ribs carry a gochujang rub instead of the usual dry rub, and the brisket holds its own against anything smoked in a more traditional pit. The sides aren't afterthoughts — cubed tofu fried until crisp and edged with heat, mac and cheese built on shell noodles instead of elbows. Nothing here reads like a gimmick once it's in front of you.

The setup is no-frills by design. There's no indoor dining, just a small fenced courtyard with umbrella-covered high-tops, and people show up anyway — suits next to neighborhood families, rain or not. That's not a compromise the place is making. It's the whole point: the food is the draw, not the room.

The recognition backs up what the plates already argue. Consecutive Bib Gourmand honors and multiple James Beard semifinalist nods for its chef confirm a kitchen operating well above its footprint. Heirloom earned its following one plate of ribs at a time, long before anyone outside Atlanta was paying attention.

The Spot
Heirloom Market BBQ sits on Akers Mill Road in Cumberland, running smoked meats through both a Southern and Korean lens. Brisket, pulled pork, and turkey breast come as sandwiches on General Muir buns or by the platter, sitting on the menu next to a spicy Korean pork option that signals the kitchen's crossover approach directly.

The gochujang-rubbed spare ribs and a pound of sweet and smoky wings are the other anchors, with tacos offering a choice of smoked meats or crispy tofu. Sides split along the same line — collards and Brunswick stew on one end, Korean sweet potatoes and kimchi slaw on the other — and four house sauces (Table, Kitchen, Korean, and Settler) cover everything from classic mild to peppery vinegar.

The restaurant holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand in both the 2024 and 2025 guides, and has been a James Beard Award semifinalist for Best Chef Southeast in 2020 and 2023. It's also landed on the Eater 38.
