New Heights has occupied its corner of Calvert Street since 1986, when Umbi Singh founded it as a neighborhood restaurant. The building has changed hands since, but the new ownership has kept its Arts & Crafts interiors and its standing as a longtime local go-to.
The kitchen's dishes draw regular mention from diners: charred octopus, ceviche, mussels, pork belly, borscht, couscous, filet, and a pistachio cake that comes up often, alongside fresh oysters and cocktails. The upstairs dining room has a reputation for being cozy and suited to special occasions, and diners generally cite it as good value for the price point.
The bar is its own draw — floor-to-ceiling windows fold the room open onto Calvert Street, with views out over Rock Creek Park and the art deco Taft Bridge, making it as much a spot for a drink as for a full dinner.
New Heights is a Michelin Guide Selected restaurant for 2025.
