Big Island Poke traces back to owner Jaydean Gabriel, who was born on the Big Island of Hawaii before his family relocated to the Seattle area as a kid. Poke stayed a constant for him growing up, and after seeing its popularity take off in California, he and business partner Cristian Umali built on the momentum of their food truck, People of the Chubbs, known for poke tacos and food truck competition wins, to open Big Island Poke in Renton in March 2016.
The menu keeps to four proteins — tako, salmon, and tuna served Hawaiian or spicy style — over warm rice, fresh greens, or as poke nachos on tortilla chips. Cucumber kimchi, cream cheese aioli, and crispy fried onions are the toppings regulars build their bowls around. Portions run generous, and the fish quality and marination do most of the work rather than a long list of add-ons.
